Women’s Fund of East Tennessee

By Mike Alread

On April 16, my wife and I had the pleasure of attending the annual Women’s Fund luncheon at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville. The Women’s Fund is a non-profit field-of-interest fund of the East Tennessee Foundation. Their mission is strong yet simple: The Women’s Fund is a catalyst to transform the lives of low-income women and girls in East Tennessee.

One of our clients, Dr. Cynthia Burnley (pictured below), chairs the Grants and Research Committee of the Fund. In the Fund’s three years of existence, they have awarded 14 grants totaling $235,000 to 11 organizations serving 25 counties. In 2015 alone, they will award almost $100,000 to nine different organizations. Cynthia and many other folks from the Johnson City area are very involved and do an exemplary job in donating their time and talents. A special presentation was made by Jason Witten (pictured below), a 9 time Pro Bowl selection and current starting tight end for the Dallas Cowboys. Along with his wife, Michelle, they head their SCORE Foundation which provides support and assistance for families and individuals affected by domestic violence. Jason also hosts a free football camp where more than 1,000 children attend each year. He has been very generous with numerous Boys and Girls Clubs in Tennessee and Texas.

It is always good to highlight people who make a difference in the lives of others. Cynthia and her husband Bob are some of the many people who donate their time and monies. They have been retired for a few years but it seems they are busier now than when they were in their working careers! I am thankful that they introduced us to the Women’s Fund. Thanks to all of you who help worthy causes throughout your communities.
